build your own smoke house

Home > Smoking Fish > Build Smoke House

For the real outdoors type there is nothing nicer than smoking your own fish in the backyard. If you are looking for a fun project to get you out of doing housework this weekend, this is it!

Components for the smoker can be bought from stainless steel fabricators or sheet metal engineers and assembly-savvy fishers will be able to construct the smoker themselves.

If you are not so handy with sharp objects then invite over some DIY fluent  mates, ply them with a little Hatton Estate wine and get them to do it for you.

The material used is 304 grade stainless steel and the drawing shows approximate dimensions in millimetres the thickness between .55mm and .90mm. The front and back sections have 20mm folds, and are bolted to the side sections with 10x4mm stainless steel bolts.

The firebox has 20mm return-flanges to allow bolting to the front section and the front firebox sliding vent has two 50mm folds.

The wires, which suspend the fish, can be in stainless steel or the foundation of New Zealand: No 8 wire, 500mm long, with one pointed end. The holes in both side members are 50mm apart and 80mm down from the top of the unit.

Just follow the diagram on the right and it should bang together quite nicely. You may want to press print just now so you have a hard copy to go by.

As we said in the email, if anyone actually builds this PLEASE take a picture, send it to us and we will find you a prize of some sort.
