Canny Locals Snap Up Rare New Zealand Wine
Hatton Estate Gimblett Road Tahi 1998, a rare New Zealand wine that sells at stratospheric prices in restaurants in London is now available in Queenstown and very reasonably priced too.
Wooed by the friendly people and scenery, and convinced to give up some of the precious stock of his wine by canny locals, Michael Daymond-King co-owner of Hatton Estate is vowing to return to beautiful Central Otago.
“It was a great combination of a sunny day, a glass or two, and wily Johan Small-Smith at the Wine Deli insisting we show Tahi to a number of serious connoisseurs in the area,” said Michael Daymond-King. “Good people great food and mesmerising scenery, I will be back with the family.”
With over 80% of their production exported, Hatton Estate wines are rarely available in New Zealand but now diners at Gantley’s, The Copper Club, The Bunker and Matakauri Lodge, as well as customers of The Wine Deli can join the connoisseurs at triple Michelin starred Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant and the Savoy Groups’ Simpson-in-the Strand in London in tasting this Bordeaux style beauty Tahi.
Lauded by wine writers as diverse as Jancis Robinson and Warren Barton, Tahi is only available at luxury lodges and a few restaurants in New Zealand one each in Christchurch and Wellington and two in Auckland.
