Carson trained as a Farmer after leaving College, working on a number of large Sheep, Beef and Deer Farms in the Hawkes Bay region. He joined Hatton Estate in 1997 working as John Rees' viticultural assistant. Skilled in all aspects of vineyard development and having an acute appreciation of the finer points of vineyard technical management, Carson was appointed Vineyard Manager of Hatton Estate in September 2001 in preparation for our inaugural onsite vintage in 2002. During the 2002 Vintage Carson has come into his own, blending the skills in the vineyard with winery production management in the style of the classic French Vigneron. "Understanding the land, being open to learning about each block, row or small patch of soil and treating each vine as an individual reflecting the vineyard as a whole leads us to produce the quality fruit required for top quality wine." Committed to vine health leading to grape quality, Carson combines the hard-nosed approach of the Viticultural practices developed by John Rees and the modern methods required in the environmental age. "There is no question-great wine is made in the vineyard. Take what Mother Nature throws at you in terms of weather and deal with it from the vines perspective and manage that outcome- it's the essence of terroir really."
