Dear Diary,

A busy time of the year for the team at Hatton Estate but we still find time for a bit of gallivanting about, tasting wine and dining in great restaurants.

This time a scheduled trip to New Plymouth to visit the crew at Waiau Estate allowed me to partake in co-owner Tarshs’ 26th birthday celebrations, which included a trip between the rural setting of Waiau Estate via helicopter along the coast to the marina setting of the new Gusto restaurant on the New Plymouth waterfront.

What a ride! Spectacular views along the rugged black sand West coast and out to sea and the setting sun.

A low pass over the Sugarloaf islands was thrilling for the passengers, as well as the two amorous climbers perched atop the tallest island!

The spring tide was well out, affording a great view of Crayfish rock a special hiding place for the delicacy, known to very few and only exposed at spring tides – best viewed from the air to pin point for future trips in the dive boat!

Crayfish can be found on the menu at Gusto in various forms – this evening it was in a rich and glorious Bisque – which was a beautifully paired with EC2 Chardonnay 2006.

The scallop ravioli special was also a yummy EC2 pairing as we all shared dishes and experiences around the large table. I once again had a gourmand experience – completely over ordering and eating everything regardless, the pork belly was sublime, matching beautifully to the 1990 Chateau Mouton Rothschild from Bordeaux, the beef fillet perfectly cooked, succulent and flavoursome and great with our kiwi Bordeaux blend Tahi 2004 and The Doctor Syrah 2005.

The collection of desserts served to completely consign my no desserts rule to the wind. Suffice to say the cheese platter with speciality imported cheeses also got a hammering and helped to soak up all the extra bottles of wine- its great dining with a group of people who are passionate about food!

The next time you are in New Plymouth its worth bypassing Aunty Maureen’s cooking at least one night and taking in the casual fine dining atmosphere and dine with gusto at Gusto!

Cheers

Michael DK
